For Heart Attack and Heart Failure, we are consistently above both the national and state percentages in required areas
For Heart Attack, the national goal is for a patient to have their heart blockage treated within 90 minutes of arrival at the hospital
- Nationwide, this occurs in 73% of patients
- In Virginia, this occurs in 82% of patients
- At Henrico Doctors' Hospital, this occurs in 94% of patients!
This is due to a great effort on the part of staff, doctors and administration, and we are extremely proud to provide this to our patients.

Retreat Doctors' Hospital Cardiac Program
More than 58 million Americans have one or more types of cardiovascular disease and many more are at risk for developing it. More than a million suffer a heart attack each year and another 300,000 will suffer cardiac arrest. An average adults heart beats 60 to 80 times per minute or 100,000 times a day. Missing a beat can spell trouble; every second the human heart is not pumping effectively is critical. Thats why we take cardiac care seriously at Retreat Hospital. Retreat Hospitals Cardiac Programs include:
Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization
Angiograms, or x-rays of the inside of the vessels surrounding the heart, are performed in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab (Cath Lab). If blocked vessels are found, patients can be referred to a sister hospital for further treatment.
Electrocardiography (EKGs)
In and outpatient services include routine and emergency electrocardiogram tracings and other monitoring devices.
Nuclear Medicine Studies
A contrast agent is used to help physicians see inside blood vessels.
Chest Pain Certification
Seconds count when theres a cardiac emergency. Cardiac emergencies, including chest pain, heart failure, arrhythmias and heart attacks, require quick treatment. To make sure every second counts, Retreat is among four HCA Richmond facilities to receive national certification for its chest pain center, located in the Emergency Department. HCA Richmond facilities are the first facilities in the region to earn this distinction.
Inpatient Critical Care
Our 13-bed critical care unit is staffed by highly qualified and experienced staff.
Telemetry Unit
Our Progressive Care Unit (PCU) allows patients to have their heart monitored during their hospital stay.
